This project explores the traumatic effects of cultural displacement on the female body. Through Romagoza’s alter ego, Cuquita the Cuban Doll, she engages in a dialogue with artist Ana Mendieta, with whom she shares many experiences and wounds. Pain of Cuba, Body I Am takes its name from a poem by Mendieta and is inspired by her work to make visible the experiences of the Cuban diaspora in the U.S. and the generational trauma we have inherited, from which we all seek ways to heal. The Colby Museum and Colby University commissioned the performance.
