90 miles, 2018. Performance/Installation. Variable Dimensions, Duration: 57 min
Cuquita, The Cuban Doll (Romagoza's alter ego), sits still in her open suitcase that she traveled from Cuba to the US in 2011 for 57 minutes, the same as Romagoza's flight time from Havana to Miami. The suitcase is a treasure trove of her personal history, containing family letters, her one-way Havana-Miami plane ticket, her lover's artwork, photographs, performance costumes, and a Granma newspaper with a statement about what the Cuban Revolution embodies. Each item is a testament to her journey and the intimacy of her narrative. 90 Miles reflects on Yali Romagoza's experience as an immigrant exploring universal displacement and trauma.
